Mayonnaise is nothing else than a cold sauce. The world is obliged for its origin to the French - gourmets and inventors. The name of product is related to the Spanish city Maon (the Minorca Island). Nobody can say exactly, how mayonnaise appeared actually, whether at the siege of the city, or on the feast in honor of its conquest. According to one version, the duke de Rechélieu conquered the Spanish city besieged by Englishmen in 1757. Because of monotony of foodstuffs and lots of spare time, a smart cook of duke invented a new sauce which became to liking not only of his master. Another version relates the invention of mayonnaise to the name of the duke Louie Krilonsky, winning back the city from Englishmen in 1782 (judging on dates, de Rishele did not manage to survive the siege). There was a feast arranged in honor of the victory, at which for the first time was cooked the sauce of olive oil, eggs, lemon-juice and red pepper. At the time of invention of this sauce, it was very expensive, because it was a hard work to mix butter and yolk by hand. But with appearance of electric mixers, mayonnaise became relatively cheap. Today mayonnaise is not a delicacy any more, but kind of seasoning to various dishes.
